Why was The Charge created in black and white?

Black and white removes the distraction of color, drawing attention to the rhino’s form, texture, and powerful forward movement. That’s the difference between simply documenting the animal and creating the sense of presence I wanted this photograph to carry.

The Artwork

At first, you see the power.

But stay with the photograph and something else begins to emerge.

The rhino is moving directly toward the camera, filling the frame as the landscape disappears behind him.

That’s when the image becomes less about the animal and more about presence.

There is nowhere for the eye to escape.

You meet him exactly as I did.

The Story Behind the Photograph

I was in Africa driving through the landscape, looking for a particular lion I wanted to photograph.

We were moving at a modest speed, careful not to disturb the wildlife around us.

Then my tracker suddenly began shouting.

“Look to your left!”

I turned.

A rhino was running directly toward our truck.

And he was already frighteningly close.

My first thought was immediate:

Oh my God. He is going to hit the truck.

For a moment, fear took over.

Then another thought entered my mind.

What are you going to do about it?

Strangely, that question calmed me down.

We hadn’t deliberately disturbed the rhino. We hadn’t chased him. There was nothing I could do at that moment to control what he decided to do next.

If he hit the truck, he hit the truck.

If there is nothing you can do to change a situation, then you still have one choice:

What are you going to do with the moment you’ve been given?

For me, the answer was obvious.

I raised my camera.

The rhino continued toward us, filling more and more of my viewfinder.

And I pressed the shutter.

This photograph has not been cropped.

What you see in the frame is how close the rhino actually was.

I had gone out that day looking for a lion.

Instead, I came home with a photograph I could never have planned—and a reminder I have carried with me ever since.

We cannot control everything that comes toward us.

But we can decide how we meet it.
