The Story Behind Love at First Sight

It was my first time in Africa.

By mid-afternoon, the light had become harsh—the kind of light most wildlife photographers avoid. But I hadn’t traveled halfway around the world to wait for perfect conditions. I wanted to make the most of every moment, so I knew I would have to work harder to use the light instead of fighting it.

After driving for hours, we came across a herd of nearly sixty elephants.

My jaw dropped.

Everything I had researched before the trip disappeared from my mind. For a few moments, I wasn’t a photographer anymore—I was simply a spectator, overwhelmed by the privilege of standing in front of these magnificent animals.

Then a voice in my head reminded me why I had come.

“You’re not here just to watch. You’re here to create.”

I climbed out of the truck carrying only my 35mm lens.

Using a wide-angle lens meant there was only one option—I had to get close.

The herd noticed me immediately and began walking in my direction. It was intimidating. These are the largest land mammals on Earth, and they could have crushed me in an instant.

I crouched low and held my ground.

As they came closer, something unexpected happened.

The fear disappeared.

A few elephants scraped the ground with their feet, reminding me who was in charge. I respected that. They could be the leaders—it never felt like a contest.

Instead, I felt something completely different.

I felt accepted.

As though, if I stayed with them long enough, they might allow me to become part of the herd.

Then I lifted the camera to my eye.

The world around me disappeared.

There was no truck.

No guide.

No audience.

There was only me… and them.

In that moment, I didn’t feel aggression.

I didn’t feel danger.

I felt love.

That is why this photograph is called Love at First Sight.

It is not a photograph about elephants.

It is a photograph about discovering that the strongest connection we can have with wildlife begins not with fear, but with respect—and sometimes, with love.
