The Artwork

At first glance, it feels graphic.

Bold lines. Clean contrast.

But stay with me…

There’s more happening.

The foreground draws you in…

but the background echoes it.

The Story Behind “Lineage”

How a curious zebra foal created the photograph I had traveled to Africa for

Before traveling to South Africa, I knew I wanted to photograph zebras differently.

Most of the zebra images I had studied used their stripes as abstract graphic patterns. I loved the concept, but I felt something was missing: emotion.

My photography has always been about creating an emotional connection first.

We photographed in the harsh afternoon sun, which most photographers try to avoid. The challenge wasn’t the light itself—it was positioning myself so the strong shadows stayed out of the composition.

The real challenge, however, wasn’t technical.

It was the mother.

I was photographing on foot with a long telephoto lens, and she wasn’t going to let me get close to her foal. Every time I adjusted my position, she calmly stepped between us.

The pattern repeated over and over:

Foal.
Mother.
Me.

Without the foal, the photograph became just another abstract of zebra stripes.

I kept moving, hoping for one small opportunity.

Then something unexpected happened.

I started talking to myself, and the foal heard me speak, which made him become curious. He stopped while his mother continued walking. Instead of following directly behind her to her right, he stepped to the opposite side for just a few seconds.

That single decision revealed him perfectly inside the abstract pattern created by his mother’s stripes.

I pressed the shutter only a few times.

Sometimes the image you’re searching for isn’t created by perfect planning.

Sometimes it’s created by curiosity.

I’m still grateful to that little zebra.

Refined Interiors

This piece introduces rhythm into a space.

The repetition of lines creates movement…

while the soft presence of the younger subject introduces balance.

It feels structured…
but it softens the room.

The Emotional Experience

Living with this artwork feels like understanding something without words.

It’s not loud.

It doesn’t push.

It connects quietly.

Because lineage isn’t seen in isolation…

it’s felt in continuity.
