The Artwork
At first, it feels like a roar.
But stay with me…
Look closer.
This isn’t directed outward.
It isn’t a warning.
It’s a declaration.
The Story Behind Uncontained
For three days, I followed this lion in South Africa.
I named him Jack.
He wasn’t the dominant male. Another lion had already claimed the territory and the lionesses that lived within it. I called that lion Tom.
For three days, the two males watched one another.
They lay about thirty feet apart, each sizing up the other, waiting for someone to make the first move. Neither wanted to risk everything. They simply stared, measuring each other’s strength.
The tension was almost unbearable.
Every morning I wondered,
“Will today be the day?”
Then it happened.
Jack stood up.
As the challenger, he had nothing to lose and everything to gain. The lionesses belonged to Tom, and Jack wanted to take over the pride.
He walked directly toward him.
Within seconds the silence exploded.
The sound of two full-grown lions colliding is something I will never forget. Their roars shook my chest. Dust filled the air. They bit, clawed, and threw each other across the ground with unbelievable force.
The fight lasted nearly ten minutes.
Eventually, Jack turned and ran.
As he retreated, I noticed blood streaming from his tail.
The battle was over.
He had lost.
A short distance away, he finally stopped.
He sat down.
Then he threw his head back and released one of the loudest roars I have ever heard.
Most people would see an angry lion.
I saw something completely different.
I saw pain.
Not just the pain of the wounds he had suffered, but the pain of losing everything he had risked his life for.
In that moment, he wasn’t roaring to intimidate another lion.
He was releasing frustration.
Disappointment.
Heartbreak.
He had held nothing back in the fight, and now he had nothing left to hide.
That was the moment I pressed the shutter.
I named this photograph Uncontained because some emotions refuse to stay inside us.
Pain.
Loss.
Determination.
Heartbreak.
They cannot always be hidden behind strength.
Sometimes they escape in a single moment, raw and honest.
That is what I witnessed that afternoon.
Not the roar of a lion…
…but the sound of a warrior who had given everything.
Refined Interiors
This piece doesn’t sit quietly in a room.
It anchors it.
The deep blacks isolate the subject…
while the open form of the roar creates tension and movement.
It feels intense…
but it elevates with control.
The Emotional Experience
Living with this artwork feels like standing in front of something that refuses limitation.
It doesn’t ask for space.
It takes it.
Because true authority isn’t contained…
it expands.
Print & Presentation
