The Story Behind “Glimpse”

It was early in the morning in Florida, and I was on an airboat with my guide, Roy. The large fan behind us roared as we skimmed across the shallow water searching for Ospreys.

Roy was incredible at spotting them.

“Osprey at three o’clock.”

“Osprey at eleven.”

He would call them out long before I ever saw them.

Finding the birds wasn’t the challenge.

Photographing them was.

I had never photographed an Osprey diving at full speed. 

The first dive…

I missed it.

The second…

I missed that one too.

Then a third.

Nothing.

Each time Roy would ask, “Did you get it?”

Each time I had to admit that I hadn’t.

It was frustrating.

Most people assume if you own a professional camera it will simply track the bird and do all the work for you.

The reality is very different.

As an Osprey reaches the water, the shimmering reflections often confuse the autofocus system. Instead of staying locked on the bird’s eye, the camera suddenly shifts its focus to the water.

That is exactly what kept happening.

Again and again, I watched another opportunity disappear.

Then Roy shouted,

“Osprey at twelve!”

I picked it up immediately and placed my focus point on its eye.

I was already expecting another missed photograph because I hadn’t changed any of my autofocus settings.

Then something extraordinary happened.

Just before reaching the water, the Osprey suddenly stopped.

It spread its wings wide, lowered its talons, and hovered perfectly still above the surface, studying the water beneath it.

For a moment, time almost stopped.

Then it folded its wings again and dove.

This time my camera stayed with it.

A second later the bird exploded back out of the water with a fish locked tightly in its talons.

Back home, I carefully finished the photograph and sent it privately to my collectors.

Less than two hours later, it sold.

As I sat there thinking about the entire experience, I couldn’t help but smile.

The Osprey got its food.

And I got mine.

Sometimes nature rewards patience in ways you could never plan.

You simply have to stay long enough to be there when it happens.
