The Story Behind “Purpose”
It was early one morning in Florida.
My airboat captain and guide, Roy, had positioned me where the Ospreys were diving for fish.
Roy was doing his job.
The Osprey was doing its job.
And I was doing mine.
Roy earned his living by helping people experience these birds.
The Osprey earned its living by catching fish.
I earned mine by photographing moments like this.
Standing there behind the camera, I realized something.
Although we all had different purposes, we were all depending on one another.
As this Osprey folded its wings and dropped toward the water, I followed it through my viewfinder.
For me, it wasn’t simply diving for a fish.
It was diving into the photograph that would become part of my life’s work.
Then, at the last moment, it missed.
The fish escaped.
The Osprey climbed back into the sky with empty talons.
Watching it fly away made me think.
To the Osprey, this wasn’t a missed photograph.
It was a missed meal.
Its survival depended on getting the next opportunity right.
Mine wasn’t so different.
If I failed to create meaningful photographs, I couldn’t share them with collectors who believed in my work.
Roy couldn’t guide photographers without healthy wildlife.
And without fish, there would be no Ospreys.
Everything was connected.
When I look at this photograph today, I don’t see failure.
I see a reminder that every life touches another.
The Osprey depends on the fish.
Roy depends on the Osprey.
I depend on both of them.
And my collectors allow me to return to places like this to continue telling these stories.
Nature has taught me that nothing truly exists on its own.
We are all connected.
And when one part of that connection thrives, we all have the opportunity to thrive with it.
