The Story Behind “Committed”
It was early one morning in Florida.
After several frustrating days, I had finally figured out how to keep my camera focused on a diving Osprey. Instead of being fooled by the shimmering water, it now stayed locked on the bird’s eye.
That changed everything.
Using a 600mm lens gave me something few people ever experience.
I wasn’t simply photographing an Osprey.
I was looking directly into its eyes as it hunted.
Dive after dive, I watched the same expression.
Sometimes it caught the fish.
Sometimes it missed.
But one thing never changed.
Its focus.
There was no hesitation.
No doubt.
No distraction.
Every dive carried the same intensity, whether the previous attempt had succeeded or failed.
I don’t know the exact success rate of an Osprey catching fish.
What I do know is that its determination never depended on the outcome of the last dive.
The next opportunity received the same complete commitment as the first.
Standing behind my camera, I realized that success isn’t built on never failing.
It’s built on refusing to let failure weaken your focus.
That lesson has stayed with me long after leaving Florida.
Whether we’re creating art, building a business, or chasing a dream, the outcome of yesterday should never decide the effort we give today.
The Osprey taught me that unwavering focus is more powerful than temporary success.
