The Artwork

At first, it feels like motion.

But stay with me…

This is not about speed — it is about presence. The rider moves forward, surrounded by emptiness, yet nothing feels uncertain.

That’s when it becomes clear.

Not solitude…
but control.

The Story Behind the “Lone Authority”

It was early morning in Wyoming, and the cold was almost unbearable.

The wind was driving snow across the landscape so hard that at times I couldn’t see the horse until it was twenty feet away from me. My cheeks were burning. My fingers were numb. I could barely hold the camera, much less feel the shutter button.

Then Ramone climbed onto his horse.

He disappeared into the snow and made his first run.

When he came back, he looked at me and asked,

“Did you get it?”

I was dumbfounded.

Did I get it?

I hadn’t even raised my camera.

I was so consumed by the cold that I had completely missed the photograph.

Then something occurred to me.

Ramone was standing in exactly the same wind.

The same snow was hitting his face.

The same cold surrounded both of us.

But he wasn’t experiencing the morning the way I was.

Why?

I had spent the morning telling myself how unbearably cold it was. Every part of my attention had gone toward what my body was feeling.

For Ramone, this was simply another day.

That realization changed something in me.

The conditions hadn’t changed.

The wind hadn’t stopped.

The temperature hadn’t risen.

But my relationship with them had.

I raised my camera.

Sometimes the circumstances around us are not what determine what we are capable of doing.

Sometimes it is the story we tell ourselves about those circumstances.

Ramone taught me that morning that two people can stand in exactly the same storm and experience two completely different worlds.

This photograph exists because I finally chose which world I wanted to be in.

Refined Interiors

it defines it.

The Emotional Experience

Living with this artwork creates a sense of independence.

It becomes a reminder that strength often exists in standing alone — moving forward without hesitation.

It feels quiet…

but powerful.
