The Story Behind “Harbor Noir”

Some photographs are created long before the shutter is pressed.

The night before I made this image, I was sitting alone in my hotel room with nothing planned. I was scrolling through my phone when I came across the film Black Swan starring Natalie Portman.

I watched it just before falling asleep. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. The next morning, I was on the beach photographing Royal Terns. My intention was simple. I wanted to create elegant bird photographs, just as I had done many times before. But something was different.

Instead of paying attention to the bird’s eye or its wings, I found myself obsessed with the positioning of its feet. I kept watching them walk. I kept watching them move. Without realizing it, I was searching for something. Then it hit me.

The ballet scenes from the film had stayed with me. The grace. The balance. The lines. The movement. Somewhere between watching the movie and falling asleep, my subconscious mind had gone to work. I was no longer looking at birds as birds. I was looking at them as dancers.

For the rest of the morning, I chased that idea. I adjusted my position. I lowered myself closer to the sand. I waited for the right gesture. Then, for a brief moment, everything aligned.

The Royal Tern lifted one foot delicately from the wet sand while extending its wing into a graceful curve. The reflection beneath it completed the composition. The bird no longer looked like a bird. It looked like a ballet dancer stepping onto a stage. I pressed the shutter.

When I later looked at the photograph, I immediately thought back to the film I had watched the night before. The elegant posture, the dramatic shape of the wing, and the quiet atmosphere all carried a feeling that reminded me of Black Swan. That connection inspired the title Harbor Noir.

To me, this photograph is a reminder that creativity often happens beneath the surface of our awareness. A film, a conversation, a piece of music, or a fleeting idea can quietly take root in the subconscious mind and later reveal itself through our work. This image was created on a beach at sunrise.

But I believe it truly began the night before, while sitting alone in a hotel room, watching a story that my subconscious mind refused to forget.
