The Story Behind “Frontline”

Most people think photographing cowboys is about action.

But that wasn’t the story I was trying to tell here.

I was photographing in the snow in Wyoming, and this horseman, Ramon, was one of the best riders I’ve ever worked with. And when I say “best,” I don’t just mean skill on a horse.

the way he rode the horse, I mean the lines he gave me.

The way he moved through the frame and on the horse reminded me of some of my fashion photography — controlled, intentional, effortless. I already knew Ramone would give me strong posture and beautiful movement.

But here’s the real issue…

The image still wasn’t complete.

The real challenge became the western hat.

I wasn’t looking for just any position. I wanted the hat to read instantly and prominently inside the frame. I wanted its shape its symbolism to become part of the identity of the image itself.

And what most people don’t realize is…

If the hat had tilted to the left by even a few centimeters or lifted higher by even an inch, the entire feeling of the image would have changed. It would lose that strong, permanent presence It would become about the rider, not the Western culture.

At the time, I didn’t know exactly when it would happen…

But I knew the photograph would only work once the lines of the horse, rider, and hat all came together as one.

It took a few runs through the snow.

Then suddenly…

Everything aligned.

The movement.

The posture.

The shape of the hat.

That’s when the image finally became the story I had imagined.

Thanks, Ramon…

For wearing it so well.

The Artwork

At first, it feels like motion.

But stay with me…

This is not about movement — it is about direction. The horse cuts through the snow, the rider remains fixed, and everything moves toward a single point.

That’s when it becomes clear.

Not travel…
but intent.

Refined Interiors

This piece brings focus into a space.

it confronts the room.

but grounded in control.
