The Artwork
At first glance, it feels like confrontation.
But stay with me…
The bison is not charging forward in chaos. It moves with purpose, breaking through snow with a calm, undeniable force.
That’s the difference.
Not aggression…
but control.
The Story Behind “Dominion”
This photograph is called Dominion.
I was in Yellowstone National Park early one morning, searching with my tracker for a large herd of bison.
We drove for some time and found nothing.
Then, far in the distance, I saw a single bison.
At that point, I was still very new to wildlife photography. I had researched bison, but I had not yet developed the experience to fully understand just how dangerous they could be.
Excitement took over.
Before my tracker could say much, I grabbed my camera, set up my tripod, and started making my way toward the bison.
The snow was nearly three feet deep.
He was at least 300 yards away, so I pushed forward through it, slowly closing the distance.
Behind me, I could hear my tracker yelling:
“Ejaz, don’t go any further.”
“Ejaz, don’t go any further.”
I kept moving.
The bison seemed completely uninterested in me. He was using his massive head to sweep the snow from side to side, exposing the grass beneath so he could feed.
Then he noticed me.
He stopped.
Lifted his head.
And looked directly at me.
That look changed everything.
There was no panic.
No dramatic movement.
He simply stood there with an authority that made his message perfectly clear:
This is my dominion. What are you doing here?
I pressed the shutter.
And then I understood.
I didn’t need him to charge.
I didn’t need him to make a sound.
His expression had already told me that I had come far enough.
That moment taught me something I have carried into every wildlife experience since.
Respect does not always announce itself loudly.
Sometimes a single look establishes the boundary.
That is why I called this photograph Dominion.
Because for that brief moment in Yellowstone, there was absolutely no question who that land belonged to.
