The Story Behind “The Baby”

I was in India with a friend who wanted to take me to a remote place where nearly 2,000 elephants gather every year.

I was excited.

But the farther we traveled, the more apprehensive I became. We were going somewhere extremely remote, and while my friend kept reassuring me that everything would be fine, I wasn’t completely convinced.

Then, as we drove toward the elephants, my friend suddenly pointed toward one of the herds.

“Look at the baby. How cute.”

I looked.

I couldn’t see a baby.

All I could see were enormous elephants standing tightly together. 

Then I saw him.

Hidden among those giant legs was this tiny elephant, moving effortlessly through the herd.

I kept watching, fascinated.

From where I was sitting, it looked dangerous. One wrong step from one of those enormous animals and this little elephant could easily be hurt.

But the baby wasn’t frightened.

He moved between them without hesitation.

There was complete trust.

And suddenly I realized that I was watching the exact opposite of what I had been feeling that morning.

I had been worried about traveling into the unknown even though I was with someone I trusted.

This little elephant was surrounded by animals many times his size, yet he moved through them without fear because he knew exactly who surrounded him.

They were not the danger.

They were his protection.

Eventually the herd shifted just enough to reveal him to me.

For a brief moment, there he was, this tiny figure framed by the enormous bodies protecting him.

I raised my camera and created this photograph.

The Baby became more than a photograph of a young elephant.

It became a reminder of something I had witnessed rather than something I had gone looking for:

When you truly trust those around you, even a world of giants can feel safe.
